Our team has been working hard toward our goal of adopting a Bitcoin Payment Protocol requirement for all BitPay payments.
Last week we took a big first step by requiring Payment Protocol payments for BitPay Card orders. Today we've completed our full Payment Protocol rollout for BitPay Card payments.
How card load payments are changing
The BitPay Card lets you load a dollar, pound, or Euro balance onto a Visa® prepaid debit card from your bitcoin wallets. You can spend that Visa® dollar balance at Visa®-accepting merchants around the world, or you can withdraw funds from Visa®-compatible ATMs.
Many of you have come to rely on the BitPay Card for your everyday expenses. We've had a chance to learn a lot from you about your common frustrations in loading your cards, including wallets that send underpayments, overpayments, or late payments. These payments are often costly to send and costly to refund.
Now, by requiring that loads to the BitPay Card come from Payment Protocol-compatible wallets, we can help to eliminate the frustration and cost of wallet mistakes.
BitPay load invoices now display QR codes and Payment Protocol URLs readable only by Payment Protocol-compatible wallets. These wallets immediately lock in the appropriate amount and the BitPay receiving address, and they help to guarantee a successful payment for you and for us.
How to pay with a Payment Protocol wallet
The BitPay, Copay, Bitcoin Core, Airbitz, Mycelium, and Electrum wallets all support the Bitcoin Payment Protocol. If you already use these wallets to pay, your payment experience will not change.
If you don't have one of these compatible bitcoin wallets, you'll need to download one.
If you need help moving funds to a Payment Protocol wallet or making a Payment Protocol payment, check out our walkthrough guide.
Our final step in Payment Protocol adoption will be to require payments from Payment Protocol-compatible wallets for all BitPay invoices. We are beginning a staged rollout of this change this week. Look for more news in the coming days.
